A Palace Built for Beauty and Intrigue
The Bahia Palace was built in the late 19th century for Si Moussa, the grand vizier of the sultan. The palace was later expanded by his son, Bou Ahmed, who brought in the best craftsmen from all over Morocco to create a masterpiece of Moroccan art.
The palace is a labyrinth of courtyards, apartments, and gardens, each one more beautiful than the last. The most impressive part of the palace is the Grand Courtyard, with its shimmering marble floor and stunning zellij tilework. The palace also has a harem, which was home to Bou Ahmed’s four wives and 24 concubines.
Location and How to Get There
The Bahia Palace is located in the Mellah (the old Jewish quarter) of Marrakech, close to the Badi Palace and the Saadian Tombs. It is easily accessible on foot if you are exploring the southern part of the Medina.
