House of Photography: A Visual Journey Through Morocco's Pas
Explore Morocco’s History at the Maison de la Photographie
The Maison de la Photographie, or House of Photography, is a fascinating museum tucked away in the heart of the Marrakech Medina. Housed in a beautifully restored Riad, this museum offers a unique and intimate look into the history and culture of Morocco through a stunning collection of vintage photographs. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in photography, history, or simply seeing a different side of Morocco.

A Century of Moroccan Life in Pictures
Founded in 2009, the museum showcases an incredible collection of over 10,000 original photographs, glass negatives, and documents, spanning from 1870 to 1960. The images capture the diverse landscapes, historic cities, and daily lives of the Moroccan people, including the Berber communities of the High Atlas mountains. The collection features work from both anonymous travelers and well-known photographers.
The exhibitions are thoughtfully curated and spread across three floors. As you wander through the intimate rooms of the Riad, you are taken on a visual journey through time. The museum also screens a rare, full-color documentary from 1957 about the Berber tribes, providing even deeper cultural insight.
Location and How to Get There
The Maison de la Photographie is located deep within the Medina. Navigating the winding alleys to find it is part of the adventure. It’s a good idea to use a map, and don’t be afraid to ask for directions.
